Edson Fichter Nature Area

The newly improved and expanded Edson Fichter Nature Area is one of Pocatello’s brightest outdoor attractions. Covering nearly 40 acres of peaceful Idaho sanctuary, this quiet, clean, and thoughtfully designed nature area has been developed through the efforts of hundreds of dedicated volunteers—including the Portneuf Greenway Foundation, Boy Scouts, civic organizations, Idaho Fish & Game, the City Parks Department, the Pocatello Science & Environment Division, supportive local businesses, and countless community members. Local pride is everywhere you look, and once you visit, you’ll understand why.

7 Things You’ll Want to Know

1. Frequently Stocked Fishing Pond

The beautiful three-acre pond is fed by the Portneuf River and managed by Idaho Fish & Game. Numerous fishing locations, footbridges, mature trees and peaceful surroundings make it one of the area’s highlights. During winter it also becomes a favorite destination for ice fishing.

2. Accessible Walking Trails

A gentle 0.8-mile paved loop features grades of 3% or less, making it ideal for wheelchairs, strollers, walkers and runners. Additional dirt paths weave throughout the property and connect directly with the Portneuf Valley Greenway trail system.

3. Sporting Dog Pond

Separate from the main fishing pond is a dedicated sporting dog pond designed specifically for retriever and water dog training. Gradual embankments make entering and exiting the water easy.

4. Ardith’s Garden & Monarch Waystation

Enjoy beautifully curated native pollinator gardens featuring winding rock pathways, benches for quiet reflection, native flowers and butterfly habitat.

5. Outdoor Amphitheater

Located near the main entrance, the outdoor amphitheater hosts educational programs and community events, including the popular Edson Fichter Nature Talks held each September.

6. Birdwatching Paradise

Nearly 100 bird species have been documented throughout the year. Bald Eagles, Osprey, Sandhill Cranes, hawks, swallows and many other birds make this one of Southeast Idaho’s best birding locations.

4 Things to Keep in Mind

  • Dogs: Dogs are welcome but must remain on a leash at all times. Dogs are not permitted in the main fishing pond.
  • Watercraft: Canoes, kayaks, paddleboards, float tubes, boats and swimming are prohibited in the fishing pond.
  • Fishing Regulations: The pond is stocked regularly with rainbow trout and occasional banana trout. The daily limit is six fish. Anglers age 14 and older must possess a valid Idaho fishing license.
  • Easy Rule: Don’t let your dog swim in the fish pond…and don’t fish in the dog pond.
